My work begins with the structure of Korean ancestral rites. A place is prepared for the absent, food is laid out, and prescribed gestures are repeated in order to call someone who has departed back into a field of relation. I translate this structure into the relationship between a mediating figure, gesture, and ground. Painting becomes not simply a surface on which the past is represented, but a way of preparing a place in which absence can become perceptible again. For me, memory is not a preserved image, but a past that is called from a virtual state into the present through an event or sensation. Yet the past never returns intact. Each time different layers of memory come into contact, the image is actualised anew, and repetition produces difference rather than sameness. The figure occupies precisely this unstable moment. Different temporalities overlap within a single body; the image emerges even as parts of it disappear, shifting again before it can settle into a complete form. The circles, vectors, lines, and divided planes that have begun to appear in my recent paintings function as a kind of terrain through which this process of actualisation is organised. The diagram does not explain the figure. Rather, it registers where the figure converges, what it connects to, and the forces by which it is displaced, constrained, or held. Across bodies, signs, empty spaces, and fields of colour, different distances, directions, and tensions accumulate until the painting becomes less a map of memory than a topography of relation. Within this topography, an event becomes a coordinate through which memory can be invoked, and what is recalled begins to act upon the present again. What the actualised past brings back is not the absent person as such. Instead, the relation once held with them reappears in another form and begins to move again through the body and senses of the present. Painting, for me, is an act of sustaining relation across transformation and absence, despite knowing that disappearance cannot be reversed. It is a way of granting renewed presence to what is vanishing, and of resisting its complete disappearance. Knowing the impossibility of this, I continue to call the figure back so that the past might still be capable of doing something, and so that a relation might continue to produce another present even after its original moment has ended. 만날 수 없는 존재와의 관계를 현재의 몸과 감각 안에서 지속시키는 것.&nbsp; 작업은 한국의 기제사에서 출발한다. 부재한 이를 위해 자리를 마련하고, 음식을 놓고, 정해진 몸짓을 반복하며 이미 떠난 존재를 다시 현재의 관계 안으로 불러들이는 의례. 나는 이 구조를 매개하는 형상, 제스처, 그리고 바탕의 관계로 옮긴다. 회화는 이때 단순히 과거를 재현하는 화면이 아니라, 부재한 것이 다시 감각될 수 있도록 하나의 자리를 마련하는 일이 된다. 내게 기억은 보존된 이미지가 아니라, 어떤 사건과 감각을 통해 잠재적인 상태에서 현재로 호출되는 과거이다 - 과거는 결코 그대로 돌아오지 않는다. 서로 다른 기억의 층위들이 접속할 때마다 형상은 새롭게 현실화되고, 반복은 동일함이 아니라 차이를 만든다. 피겨는 바로 그 찰나에 놓여 있다. 하나의 신체 안에 서로 다른 시간들이 포개지고, 형상은 나타나는 동시에 지워지며, 완결되기 전에 다시 다른 상태로 이행한다. 최근 작업에 등장하기 시작한 원, 벡터, 선과 분할된 색면은 이러한 현재화의 과정을 조직하는 일종의 지형으로 작동한다. 도식은 형상을 설명하지 않는다. 오히려 그것이 어디에서 수렴하고, 무엇과 연결되며, 어떤 힘에 의해 밀려나거나 붙잡히는지를 기록한다. 신체와 기호, 빈 공간과 색면 사이에는 서로 다른 거리와 방향, 긴장이 생기고, 화면은 점차 기억의 지도가 아니라 관계의 토포그라피가 된다. 그곳에서 사건은 기억을 호출하는 좌표가 되고, 소환된 기억은 다시 현재에 정동한다. 현재화된 과거가 돌려놓는 것은 대상이 아니라 관계다. 부재한 대상의 귀환이 아닌, 관계의 출현. 내게 회화는 사라짐을 되돌릴 수 없다는 사실을 알면서도, 대상의 변화와 부재를 가로질러 관계를 지속하려는 행위다. 사라지는 것에 다시 현재성을 부여하고, 그것이 완전히 사라지는 것에 저항하는 일. 그 불가능성을 알지라도 --- 과거가 다시 무언가를 할 수 있도록. 관계가 끝난
